The Department for Education (DfE) has launched its new £3bn DfE Offsite Framework, also known as the Modern Methods of Construction (MMC1) framework, following completion of the evaluation of tenders.
The new framework is the next step in the evolution of offsite construction of school buildings following on from the previous successful DfE Modular frameworks. The framework will utilise the next generation design in standardised school design which builds on earlier component design approach to offsite construction and incorporates the changes to the standard Output Specification (OS).
The new MMC1 framework is split into two lots. Lot 1 is intended for larger projects with floor areas exceeding 6000m2 and will be used mainly for the delivery of offsite-built secondary schools and blocks, as well as primary schools of all sizes, while lot 2 will be used to deliver projects with floor areas of under 6000m2 and is intended to be used for offsite-built primary school schemes and secondary blocks. Five contractors will be appointed to each lot.
The framework will be made available to local authorities and academy trusts to use.
As part of the framework, contractors will be required to help achieve social and/or environmental policy objectives relating to recruitment, training and supply chain initiatives, such as apprenticeships and T-levels.
