GEMS
The DfE has published the updated version of Good Estate Management for Schools. While some of the changes are due to new guidance or legislation, most are in response to feedback from users in schools and responsible bodies. Thanks those in the EBDOG community that supported that process. The update published today includes:
An easy to read list of the benefits of good estate management
A series of tools to support estate management activities in schools (i) the GEMS Self-Assessment Tool, which is now interactive and can be completed online / will automatically generate an action plan, (ii) an interactive tool to help track compliance with health and safety and building regulations and inspections, (iii) a tool to help prioritise maintenance projects and tasks and a comprehensive checklist to reduce energy and water usage
For those new to GEMS, the DfE have produced a short animated video about the GEMS resources.
Asbestos Management in Schools
The DfE have also updated their guidance on Managing asbestos in schools. Changes include:
- updates on the day-to-day management of asbestos, and what to do if things do go wrong
- an update on the legislative framework
- new case studies to help manage asbestos effectively/improve practice
These improved resources will help schools to recover stronger from the Covid pandemic and build their resilience for the future.
